Some wood species may exhibit discoloration due to natural extractives, which can be prevented by using an isolating sealer and mid-coat. Ensure all external materials in contact with the coating system, such as putty, adhesive tapes, sealants, and cleaners, are tested for compatibility by the user to avoid any adverse reactions.
More Info
HV’ART Advanced Lacquer Glaze are ready-to-use glazes, available in four variations, each designed for specific purposes:
-
Open Time: Offers an extended working time of up to one hour, making it ideal for large areas and intricate designs like wood grain, marbling and trompe-l’œil. This slow-drying glaze allows for ample time to manipulate and perfect complex patterns.
-
Open Time Pattern Hold: Shares the extended working time of the Open Time version but is formulated with a thicker consistency. This makes it particularly suitable for holding distinct patterns and textures (e.g. strie, stippling, glazing moldings), providing more control and definition in application.
-
Studio Set: Designed for faster working, catering to projects with tighter timelines or artists who prefer a quicker setting time.
-
Studio Set Pattern Hold: Like the Studio Set version, offers a faster working time. However, it also features a thicker consistency like the Open Time Pattern Hold glaze, making it optimal for creating and maintaining defined patterns in less time.
Areas of Use
HV’ART Advanced Lacquer Glazes excel in creating decorative patterns such as wood grain, marbling, and trompe-l’œil. Their tintability with Mixol universal tinters and artist acrylics allows for subtle colour blending, essential for achieving natural, life like effects.
For wood grain, layering tinted glazes with graining tools replicates the movement and depth of real timber. Marbling involves swirling and feathering glazes to produce the complex veining and translucency of stone, while trompe-l’œil — the art of optical illusion — benefits from the lacquer glaze’s smooth, controlled flow, allowing for the precise rendering of light and shadow.
The HV’ART lacquer glaze’s sheer quality allows it to sit exceptionally tight to the surface, making it ideal for finishes that are later polished or “buried” beneath lacquer layers. This property enhances realism and depth in marble or lacquer work, enabling a perfectly flat, refined finish. The semi-durable matt surface adds a sophisticated touch, enhancing the authenticity of these traditional decorative techniques within the HV’ART system. When used in combination with HV’ART Lacquer Paints and Decorative Canvas, these glazes provide a robust, versatile medium for artistic expression.
Prep & Application
Preparation
Lacquer Glazes offer versatile application, primarily with a brush or roller, demanding attention to detail for optimal outcomes. When brushing, use a high-quality glazing brush.
For mixing colours into the glaze, Mixol universal tinters are recommended. These are fully compatible and will not affect drying times, provided they are not used in excess. Mixol remains a true universal tint with no siccative value, meaning it contains no drying agents and therefore stays “wet” within the medium, allowing extended open time and smooth blending.
Artists’ acrylics may also be used for colouration; however, they possess a natural siccative value, which will accelerate the drying process. Both options offer flexibility in tone and hue, though Mixol is preferred when longer working time and subtle modulation are required.
Application
The glazes are formulated for layering over HV’ART Advanced Decorative Canvas, facilitating cohesive, multi-layered finishes with a semi-durable, soft matt sheen that adds elegance and depth to the final surface. While the glaze may be left as is in areas where additional sheen or durability is not required, the finish can ultimately be sealed and completed with a selected sheen from the HV’ART Crystal Lacquer Collection, achieving the desired level of surface refinement and protection.
