IMPORTANT - HV'ART is a professional system that requires adherence to the application instructions defined in the HV'ART Technical Data Sheets & Faux Brushes Application Guide. Purchasers acknowledge that they have completed and understand the Faux Brushes Online Applicator Training Series with Pierre Finkelstein. When applicable, purchaser acknowledges that cans are sold by weight (kg) and not by volume (litres), and that 1 kg is equivalent to approximately 900 ml.

All four variations are ready-to-use clear glazes that can be tinted, offering a wide spectrum of customizable colors. They are designed for application over HV'ART Lacquer Paint or Decorative Canvas, allowing for cohesive and durable multi-layered finishes. Each glaze dries to a semi-durable soft matte sheen, providing an elegant, understated look.

HV'ART Open Time Advanced Lacquer Glaze offers an extended working time of up to one hour, making it ideal for intricate designs like wood grain, marbling, and trompe-l'œil. This slow-drying glaze allows for ample time to manipulate and perfect complex patterns.

HV'ART Open Time Pattern Advanced Lacquer Glaze shares the extended working time of the Open Time version but is formulated with a thicker consistency. This makes it particularly suitable for holding distinct patterns and textures, providing more control and definition in application.

More Info

HV’ART Advanced Lacquer Glaze are ready-to-use glazes, available in four variations, each designed for specific purposes:

  • Open Time: Offers an extended working time of up to one hour, making it ideal for large areas and intricate designs like wood grain, marbling and trompe-l’œil. This slow-drying glaze allows for ample time to manipulate and perfect complex patterns.
  • Open Time Pattern Hold: Shares the extended working time of the Open Time version but is formulated with a thicker consistency. This makes it particularly suitable for holding distinct patterns and textures (e.g. strie, stippling, glazing moldings), providing more control and definition in application.
  • Studio Set: Designed for faster working, catering to projects with tighter timelines or artists who prefer a quicker setting time.
  • Studio Set Pattern Hold: Like the Studio Set version, offers a faster working time. However, it also features a thicker consistency like the Open Time Pattern Hold glaze, making it optimal for creating and maintaining defined patterns in less time.

Areas of Use

HV’ART Advanced Lacquer Glazes excel in creating decorative patterns such as wood grain, marbling, and trompe-l’œil. Their tintability with Mixol universal tinters and artist acrylics allows for subtle colour blending, essential for achieving natural, life like effects.

For wood grain, layering tinted glazes with graining tools replicates the movement and depth of real timber. Marbling involves swirling and feathering glazes to produce the complex veining and translucency of stone, while trompe-l’œil — the art of optical illusion — benefits from the lacquer glaze’s smooth, controlled flow, allowing for the precise rendering of light and shadow.

The HV’ART lacquer glaze’s sheer quality allows it to sit exceptionally tight to the surface, making it ideal for finishes that are later polished or “buried” beneath lacquer layers. This property enhances realism and depth in marble or lacquer work, enabling a perfectly flat, refined finish. The semi-durable matt surface adds a sophisticated touch, enhancing the authenticity of these traditional decorative techniques within the HV’ART system. When used in combination with HV’ART Lacquer Paints and Decorative Canvas, these glazes provide a robust, versatile medium for artistic expression.

Prep & Application

Preparation

Lacquer Glazes offer versatile application, primarily with a brush or roller, demanding attention to detail for optimal outcomes. When brushing, use a high-quality glazing brush.

For mixing colours into the glaze, Mixol universal tinters are recommended. These are fully compatible and will not affect drying times, provided they are not used in excess. Mixol remains a true universal tint with no siccative value, meaning it contains no drying agents and therefore stays “wet” within the medium, allowing extended open time and smooth blending.

Artists’ acrylics may also be used for colouration; however, they possess a natural siccative value, which will accelerate the drying process. Both options offer flexibility in tone and hue, though Mixol is preferred when longer working time and subtle modulation are required.

Application

The glazes are formulated for layering over HV’ART Advanced Decorative Canvas, facilitating cohesive, multi-layered finishes with a semi-durable, soft matt sheen that adds elegance and depth to the final surface. While the glaze may be left as is in areas where additional sheen or durability is not required, the finish can ultimately be sealed and completed with a selected sheen from the HV’ART Crystal Lacquer Collection, achieving the desired level of surface refinement and protection.

The HV'ART Lacquer Paint System can be made in any color, has a hard crystal quality, a soft silky-smooth finish and in formulation is equivalent to the paints & lacquers used by premium furniture makers. Included in the system are: adhesion promoting primers & undercoats, tinted lacquer paint for furniture painting & a ‘Decorative Canvas’ as a base for decorative glazes. There are four different setting ‘Lacquer Glazes’ for all decorative finishes & a range of crystal lacquers with 9 sheens available starting from ‘Mineral 00’ Deep Flat working their way incrementally to the ‘Ceramic 90’ Ultimate Gloss. These lacquers can be used in conjunction with the HV’Art additives for ultimate durability.

Formulated in the United Kingdom by the HV'Art team for Henry Van Der Vijver Decorative Artworks.

Achieve Ultra High-Gloss

A luxurious ultra high-gloss mirror finish can be achieved through the process of application, followed by sanding with a high quality low variable speed handheld sander, and then reapplication.  Each lacquer sheen can have a natural finish with fine brush strokes or can be sanded to a mirror like effect.
